Varicose veins occur on the legs and appear like cords that are twisting and bulging.  Usually blue in color they may or may not cause pain.  Sometimes patients report a feeling of heaviness or deep aching around these areas.  Sensations of burning, muscle cramping and pain have also been reported by patients suffering from these varicosities. Varicose veins worsen over time and can be exacerbated by standing or sitting for long periods.  A job that requires heavy lifting can also make this condition worse.  Other circumstances like pregnancy and obesity can cause varicose veins. If left untreated, varicose veins will continue to worsen and can eventually lead to inflammation of the skin, ulcers and infection.

When to see a doctor

Losing weight if you are obese, elevating your legs and wearing compression stockings can help ease the pain of varicose veins and may prevent them from getting worse.  If you have tried these and nothing is working, then it is time to see your physician.  Robert T. Motazedi, MD has been effectively treating varicose veins using Sclerotherapy for more than 30 years.

What causes varicose veins?

Varicose veins occur in your saphenous system.  This system returns blood from your legs back to your heart to be oxygenated and re-circulated back through your body. To return blood to your heart, the saphenous veins in your legs must work against gravity.  In other words, your body must push the blood uphill.  Normally a healthy vein has tiny valves that open to allow the blood to go uphill, but do not allow it to flow backwards.  When they become damaged, these valves no longer work and the body must work harder to get the blood back to the heart.  The increased pressure forced on the surrounding valves can cause them to malfunction leading to a larger and more twisted varicosity.

You are more at risk developing varicose veins as you age, if you are pregnant, have a family history of varicosities, obese, stand or sit for long periods of time, lift heavy weights or suffer injuries to the pelvic area.

Why choose the Colorado Laser Clinic?

Dr. Robert T. Motazedi has been successfully treating varicose veins for more than 30 years using a technique called Sclerotherapy (injection therapy).  When performed correctly, sclerotherapy has a high satisfaction rate among patients.  It is important to always find a well qualified physician to perform this procedure.  A new craze using lasers to treat these vessels has become popular.  Laser treatment has proven to be as effective as surgical stripping, but like surgery laser treatment is expensive, requires anesthesia and carries the same risks of scarring and pain.  Unlike surgery, laser treatment of deep veins can cause burns that result in scarring and long term pain.  Sclerotherapy offers the same efficacy of laser or surgical stripping with a lower risk of negative reactions.  Sclerotherapy is affordable and does not need to be done under anesthesia.  Most patients are able to return to work in 24 hours and only need to wear compression hosiery for 6 days following treatment.  Dr. Motazedi has successfully completed hundreds of these treatments.  Most patients require only one treatment to get rid of their varicosities.
